When I was ten years old, I started to teach myself the basics of HTML through looking up tutorials and good old fashion trial and error. My purpose at the time was to make my own little web pages on the website Neopets. I loved learning HTML, and web design became my favourite hobby from then onwards.
When I was eighteen years old and nearing the end of my last year of high school, I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career. At the time I thought to myself, “There is no way I would want to sit behind a desk for the rest of my life.”
So, I decided to become a registered practical nurse, which meant I took a two year nursing program at my local college. For the next three years of my life I worked as a RPN caring for the elderly. However, in November of 2012 something changed in me. Going to work became the most dreaded thing in my life. I was incredibly unhappy. I went through months feeling trapped behind the walls of my work place, thinking to myself “I can’t believe I have to do this for the rest of my life.”
In February of 2013 my Dad reminded me that I am still young and could go back to school if I want to; and if I am not happy I should do whatever makes me happy.
I knew what made me happy; I had been tossing the idea in the back of my mind for the past few months.
I want to be a web designer.
That month I applied to Durham College‘s Contemporary Web Design diploma program, was accepted into the program, and then accepted the offer. At the time, I had a full-time temporary position at my nursing job, with the chance that it might become permanent full-time in the near future.
The position became permanent and I gave it up.
In September of 2013 I start at Durham College. I am so happy/excited/relieved to learn more of what I already enjoy doing.
This website is my personal thoughts during my journey to become a professional web designer. As I grow the website, I intend to give out freebies and share tutorials to help others.
The name of this website is simply a cheeky reference and over simplification of what a web designer does, make the internet look pretty.
